Muslin Blanket vs Waffle Blanket: Which Is Better?

Both are cotton, and both are breathable. The better one depends on your night, your dryer and your skin.

Short answer

Pick the weave for the job. Muslin stacks open layers of cotton that let air move through all night, but it hangs to dry. Waffle is a textured cotton grid that you can put in a low dryer. If you wake hot, start with muslin. If the dryer and a firmer, patterned look matter more, start with waffle. Neither suits everyone, and this page says who each one fails.

What should you compare before you choose muslin or waffle?

A comparison goes wrong when it names a winner in the first sentence. Both of these blankets are 100% cotton, so fiber will not split them. The weave, the weight, the care and the feel do. Architectural Digest's cooling-blanket roundup lists them side by side as the kind of fabrics its team loves: “gauzy cotton, airy linens, and waffle weaves” (Architectural Digest). Both are breathable. The question is which one fits your night.

Use these five checks on both blankets.

  1. Air. Can air move through the cloth, or only over its surface?
  2. Fiber. Both blankets below are 100% cotton. Cotton takes in moisture.
  3. Weight without a stuffed fill. Neither is a comforter. More layers mean more cotton, and more cotton means more warmth.
  4. Care you will actually do. Muslin wants a place to hang. Waffle can take a low dryer.
  5. The person it does not fit. A hot sleeper and a cold sleeper should not be handed the same top layer, and not everyone likes the same texture.

Layer counts are not a standard. Our two muslin blankets use six and nine. Compare layers on the product page, not on the word “muslin.”

Why can a cotton blanket still wake you up hot?

A lot of hot sleepers already tried “just get cotton” and still wake up. One r/Bedding post from April 2025 describes it:

“I found that one cotton blanket wasn’t quite warm enough so I’ve added a second cotton blanket but I’m still sometimes waking up to hot.”

— r/Bedding, April 2025, “Still waking up hot with cotton blankets”

Two cotton blankets can still stack into a closed layer. Fiber is half the answer and weave is the other half. Sleep researchers who reviewed thermal environment and sleep found that humid heat adds to the thermal load during sleep (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012). A cover that holds humid heat in will add to it.

Also in April 2025, another r/Bedding thread asked about a blanket for a room that reaches 78 degrees. Both weaves got named in the replies:

“You need a waffle pattern and a light fabric like cotton.”

— r/Bedding, April 2025, reply on a 78-degree-room thread

“or consider a cotton gauze blanket, they’re very lightweight and fairly breathable”

— r/Bedding, April 2025, another reply in the same thread

So the crowd does not pick one. People pick a weave that lets air through and a fabric that is light. That is what the rest of this page tests: which one does that job for which person.

How does six-layer muslin behave?

The AltiCoddle™ six-layer blanket stacks six layers of 100% muslin cotton in an open weave. It arrives already washed once, and a person looks over every piece by hand before it ships. Air can move between the layers. That is why it suits a hot sleeper who still wants a blanket on top of them, not a bare sheet.

Sizes run from a 50 × 60 in throw to a 95 × 110 in king, measured at full stretch, so expect a slight variation. Solid colors are Dune, Green, Blue, Pink, White, Grey and Purple. Prints include Rose, Magnolia, Dove, Deer and Maple Leaves, and prints cost $10 more than solids. The care label says machine wash cold, gentle; hang dry; no tumble dry; no iron; no fabric softener.

Now the cons. It hangs to dry, so it needs space and time. It is light, so a cold sleeper may want more weight. The crinkled, puffy texture is the point of muslin, but it is not for everyone. A poster on r/Bedding in August 2025 asked for summer blankets and wrote that they had seen “too many things that include waffle knits, muslin gauze, and other fabrics that make me want to peel my skin off” (r/Bedding). If you are sensitive to texture, feel one before you buy.

The Cherish Company — AltiCoddle™ Six-Layer Muslin Cotton Blanket in Dune

Wins the airflow job

AltiCoddle™ Six-Layer Muslin Cotton Blanket

  • Six layers of 100% muslin cotton in an open weave
  • Throw to King, 50 × 60 in to 95 × 110 in at full stretch
  • Pre-washed once and hand-checked before it ships

Good to know: Hang it to dry. The dryer can shrink it. Prints start at $79, not $69.

Solid throw $69

If six layers feel too light, there is a heavier muslin. The AltiCoddle™ Premium stacks nine layers of 100% muslin cotton, and the product page says it is 50% thicker than the six-layer. The care rules are the same. The cost is more weight, which is the one thing a hot sleeper is trying to remove. Buy it for weight you have already missed, not as a default upgrade.

The Cherish Company — AltiCoddle™ Premium Extra-Thick Muslin Blanket in Green

More cotton, still muslin

AltiCoddle™ Premium Extra-Thick Muslin Blanket

  • Nine layers of 100% muslin cotton
  • Our page says it is 50% thicker than the six-layer
  • Throw $89, large throw $125, queen $162, king $205

Good to know: More layers means more warmth. Some hot sleepers will want the six-layer instead.

How does a cotton waffle behave?

The LumiBliss™ blanket is 100% cotton, woven into a large-cell waffle you can see and feel, with a flat woven hem and no fringe. The grid lifts the cloth off the body a little, and it gives a plain bed some texture. The care label says machine wash cold and tumble dry low, with no iron and no fabric softener. For many people the dryer alone decides it.

Three sizes are offered: medium at 40 × 60 in for the sofa, large at 60 × 80 in, and XL at 80 × 90 in for a bed. Colors are Beige, Grey, Green, Light Green, Pink and Yellow. Prices run from $69.95 for the medium to $119.95 for the large and $179.95 for the XL.

Now the cons. A waffle grid is a texture on one woven layer, not a stack of open gauze layers, so it gives less of that layered air path than muslin. Waffle is not for everyone either. Good Housekeeping's cooling-blanket review notes that waffle weave “tends to be less soft compared to other materials,” even while praising one waffle blanket as an exception (Good Housekeeping). A poster looking for a summer quilt in July 2025 wrote that they had “tried a waffle blanket and didn’t like it” (r/Bedding). And the bed size costs $179.95.

The Cherish Company — LumiBliss™ Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket in Beige

Wins the dryer job

LumiBliss™ Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket

  • 100% cotton in a large-cell waffle weave
  • Medium 40 × 60 in, Large 60 × 80 in, XL 80 × 90 in
  • Six colors, from Beige to Light Green

Good to know: The medium is a sofa size. It will not cover a mattress. The XL is $179.95.

Which weave wins for each job?

Read the row, then the blanket. The winner is the job, not the brand.

Job Air Fiber Care Better fit
Hot sleeper who kicks the covers off Open layers let air between them 100% cotton Hang dry Six-layer muslin
You want to use a dryer A textured grid 100% cotton Tumble dry low LumiBliss™ waffle
You want more cotton weight Open, but thicker 100% cotton, nine layers Hang dry Premium muslin
You want a crisp, structured look on the bed A textured grid 100% cotton Tumble dry low LumiBliss™ waffle
You want a queen cover, 80 × 90 in Muslin layers or a waffle grid 100% cotton Hang dry or low dryer Six-layer queen at $109, or waffle XL at $179.95
You dislike a gauzy or crinkled feel — 100% cotton — Neither is a safe guess. Feel one first.
You sleep cold Light either way 100% cotton — Premium muslin, or add a second layer

Who should skip each weave?

Skip the six-layer muslin if you need a tumble dryer, if you sleep cold, or if you want a blanket that feels heavy. Skip it if you only compared throw prices and expect a 50 × 60 in throw to dress a queen bed.

Skip the waffle if you wake hot and want the most open weave you can buy, if you have already tried a waffle blanket and did not like it, or if the $179.95 bed size is the wrong number. Skip the medium if you wanted a blanket for the whole mattress.

Skip both if the gauzy or grid texture feels wrong to you on your skin. Some people cannot stand either one, as the r/Bedding poster above put it. A smooth cotton percale sheet with a light top layer is a different job, and our best blanket for hot sleepers guide goes through the other options.

Questions shoppers ask

Is a muslin blanket cooler than a waffle blanket?

Both are 100% cotton here, so the difference is the weave. Muslin stacks open gauze layers, and air moves between them. Waffle is a textured grid. For all-night airflow on a hot sleeper, start with muslin. Waffle is the easier one to care for.

Can I put a muslin or a waffle blanket in the dryer?

Our AltiCoddle™ muslin blankets are hang dry only, because dryer heat causes shrinkage. The LumiBliss™ waffle blanket can go in the dryer on low. Both are washed cold, and neither takes fabric softener or an iron.

Which size covers a bed?

For a queen, the six-layer muslin queen is 80 × 90 in at $109 for a solid color. The LumiBliss™ waffle XL is also 80 × 90 in, at $179.95. Muslin sizes are measured at full stretch, so allow for a slight variation. A throw or a medium will not cover a mattress.

Is the waffle blanket in the Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer?

On the live store today, yes. Buy 1 Get 1 Free applies to select styles and currently includes the six-layer muslin, the premium muslin and the LumiBliss™ waffle. It can change, so check the product page before you buy.
