Short answer

A muslin blanket is layers of loosely woven cotton stitched into one crinkled blanket. Choose by layer count and size: six layers suit most sleepers all year, and nine layers are warmer. Our top pick is the AltiCoddle™ six-layer. Wash it cold and hang it to dry.

How we chose

We picked from what we sell. Layers, sizes, care and prices come from our product pages, read on October 27, 2026. We did not run lab tests, and we do not give scores. The picks suit different sleepers, so they are not ranked against each other.

What is muslin, exactly?

Muslin is a plain-woven cotton fabric with an open weave. The threads sit a little apart, so you can see light through a single layer. On its own, one layer is thin and gauzy. When several layers are stacked and stitched together, the small gaps between threads and between layers hold pockets of air. That is what makes a muslin blanket feel warm without feeling heavy.

The layers are often pre-washed before they reach you. Washing makes the cotton shrink a little and pucker into the soft, bubbly texture people love. Our AltiCoddle™ six-layer muslin blanket is 100% muslin cotton, pre-washed and hand-checked before it ships, so the crinkle is there on the first night.

Why do adults like muslin blankets?

Ask hot sleepers on Reddit what they use, and natural fibers come up again and again. In an r/Bedding thread from October 2026, a hot sleeper who starts the night a little cold asked for a blanket that would not cook them. One answer:

“Multilayer muslin blankets help a lot from my experience they breathe but keep you warm especially if you start off hot.”

— r/Bedding, October 2026

That sums up the appeal:

  • It breathes. Air and moisture can move through the open weave, so heat does not build up under the covers the way it can under a dense synthetic blanket.
  • It still feels like a blanket. Several layers give you weight and drape, not the flat feel of a sheet.
  • It works for more of the year. On warm nights it can be your only cover. On cold nights it layers under a quilt or duvet.
  • It is soft on skin. Cotton muslin has no plastic sheen and no static cling.

Your body temperature matters for sleep. A review of sleep research published by the US National Library of Medicine found that people fall asleep most easily while their core body temperature is going down, and that humid heat adds to the body's heat load during sleep (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012). A blanket that lets heat and moisture escape works with that process, not against it.

Another r/Bedding reply, from June 2026, answered a question about a fluffy blanket that will not cook a hot sleeper:

“Muslin doesn't look full, but it's soft (and gets softer the longer you have it) it drapes beautifully, and it's very breathable and light so it's perfect for hot sleepers!”

— r/Bedding, June 2026

How many layers should a muslin blanket have?

Layer count is the single biggest choice. More layers mean more warmth, more weight and more durability. Fewer layers mean a lighter, cooler blanket.

Layers How it feels Best for
2 layers (double gauze) Light and sheet-like Sheets, duvet covers, summer pajamas
4 layers Light blanket, quite thin Very hot climates, sofa throws
6 layers Soft, airy, real blanket weight Most hot sleepers, year-round use
9 layers Thicker and heavier, still breathable People who want more warmth without a synthetic fill

The thinner the blanket, the faster it can wear. If you want a blanket you keep for years, we think six layers is a sensible floor. We make two weights: the AltiCoddle™ with six layers, and the AltiCoddle™ Premium with nine layers, for about 50% more thickness, in the same 100% muslin cotton.

  • Layers. Six for everyday use, nine if you want more warmth from one blanket.
  • Size at full stretch. Our sizes are measured stretched out, so allow for a little variation.
  • Care you will actually do. Muslin goes in the washer on cold. It does not go in the tumble dryer.

Which size muslin blanket should I buy?

Muslin blankets are measured flat. Because the fabric crinkles, a muslin blanket can measure a little smaller when it is relaxed than when it is stretched out. Our sizes are measured at full stretch, so allow for slight variation.

Size Inches Use it for
Throw 50 × 60 Sofa, reading chair, travel
Large Throw 60 × 80 One person on a twin or full bed, or a generous sofa wrap
Queen 80 × 90 Queen beds, or full beds with more drape
King 95 × 110 King and Cal King beds, or two people who both pull the covers

A simple rule: if the blanket is your main bed cover, buy your bed size. If two people share it and one of you tends to wrap up, go one size up. If you sleep under a duvet and only want a muslin layer on top, the same bed size looks best.

Muslin vs. waffle vs. fleece: what is the difference?

All three are popular, and each one suits a different sleeper.

Fabric How it handles heat Good to know
Muslin Layered, open-weave cotton. Airy, so it suits hot sleepers Crinkled, soft and drapes close to the body
Waffle weave A single cotton fabric with a grid of small square pockets More structured and textured than muslin
Fleece A brushed synthetic with a plush, deep pile. The warmest of the three Best for cold sleepers, sofa nights and a cocooned feel

  • Medium 40 × 60 in, Large 60 × 80 in, XL 80 × 90 in

Many homes end up with more than one. A muslin blanket on the bed and a fleece blanket on the sofa is a very common pair.

How do I wash a muslin blanket?

Muslin is easy to care for, but heat is its enemy. Most damage people describe online comes from hot washes, hot dryers and fabric softener. For our AltiCoddle™ blankets, follow these steps:

  1. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
  2. Use a mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener. It coats the cotton and makes it less absorbent.
  3. Do not tumble dry. A hot dryer can shrink the cotton.
  4. Hang it to dry, over a line, a rail or two chairs.
  5. Do not iron it. The crinkle is part of the design.

Good to know

Heat is muslin's enemy. Hot water and the tumble dryer are what shrink it. Expect the texture to change a little in the first few washes as the cotton relaxes. That is normal. If you see a loose thread, trim it with scissors rather than pulling it.

Is a muslin blanket warm enough for winter?

It depends on your home and how you sleep. A six-layer muslin blanket on its own is a light-to-medium cover. In a cool bedroom, most people use it as one layer in a stack: a muslin blanket close to the body, with a quilt or duvet on top that they can push off. Hot sleepers often find that this mix lets them stay comfortable all night, because the muslin layer never traps heat against the skin.

If you want one blanket that is warmer on its own, choose the nine-layer AltiCoddle™ Premium. If you are a true cold sleeper, a fleece blanket will feel warmer.

Frequently asked questions

Is muslin the same as gauze?

They are close cousins. Both are light, open-weave cotton. "Gauze" usually describes the very light, airy weave, and "muslin" is the common name for the fabric and the layered blankets made from it. You will often see the two words used for the same thing.

Do muslin blankets shrink?

Cotton can shrink if it gets hot. Our AltiCoddle™ blankets are pre-washed before they ship, which takes out most of the first shrink. To avoid more, wash cold and hang to dry. Skip the tumble dryer.

Can a muslin blanket be used for a baby?

Muslin is a classic baby fabric. For babies, use pieces made for them, like our muslin baby swaddle, and follow safe-sleep advice from your pediatrician. A full-size adult blanket does not belong in a crib.

Can I get a muslin blanket with a name on it?

Yes. Our personalized muslin blanket takes custom lettering and comes in sizes from Baby (31 × 31 in) to King (95 × 110 in). It makes a good gift for a new home, a new baby or a wedding.
