7 Reasons Hot Sleepers Choose Muslin Over Polyester

Hot sleepers switch when the cover traps heat, the second blanket still fails, and they want one cotton layer they can live with. Each reason comes with its limit.

Short answer

Hot sleepers leave polyester because an open cotton weave lets heat and damp out, and a closed polyester cover does not. The reasons below are specific, and each one comes with a limit. Muslin is hang dry only, light if you sleep cold, and not a cure for anything.

Why do hot sleepers switch blankets?

The pattern is boring and specific. You get into bed comfortable. A few hours later the cover is too warm. You push it off, cool down, and pull it back. One r/Bedding reader found out the cause the slow way:

“I didn’t realize until now, but my current duvet insert is down alternative aka plastic from Amazon.”

— r/Bedding, May 2026, hot sleeper recommendations

Sleep researchers who reviewed the thermal environment and sleep found that in real-life settings, with bedding and clothing, heat exposure increases wakefulness and that humid heat adds to the thermal load (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012). We use the sleepers' own words below, with the thread links, and we do not use our store reviews.

Reason #1: An open weave gives heat somewhere to go

Reason #1 is structure. The AltiCoddle™ six-layer blanket stacks six layers of 100% muslin cotton in an open weave, so air has gaps to move through between the layers. Heat that would sit under a closed cover has a path out.

The con is weight. Open and light can feel like not enough if you sleep cold or if the room really is chilly. In that case use the premium nine-layer, or add a second layer, and do not expect one throw to do every job.

Reason #2: Cotton absorbs moisture and polyester leaves it on the surface

Reason #2 is fiber. One r/Bedding reply from May 2026 said “switching away from polyester/down alternative made the biggest difference for me,” and that cotton, linen or lightweight wool “doesn’t trap heat the same way” (r/Bedding). That is a reader's view. A sleep consultant quoted by the Sleep Foundation says it plainly: “Synthetic fibers tend to be less breathable and trap more heat at night” (Sleep Foundation).

The con: cotton is not magic. A poster in r/Menopause warned that “when it gets wet, it stays wet and clammy” (r/Menopause). Cotton that is soaked stays damp for a while, so keep a spare set of sheets or pajamas by the bed.

Reason #3: One thin layer can replace a two-blanket stack

Reason #3 is the stack itself. In a thread on layering for a hot sleeper, one commenter wrote that a six-layer muslin is “really light and airy,” and that they add or remove layers as needed in the night (r/Bedding, August 2026). One open layer on top, with a throw at the foot of the bed, is easier to adjust than two closed layers on top of each other.

The con: one muslin layer will not replace a winter comforter in a cold house. If you need weight, look at the premium nine-layer blanket. If you are cold at bedtime and hot at 3 a.m., the layers are the answer, not the thickest blanket.

Reason #4: You still feel a blanket on you

Reason #4 is comfort. Many hot sleepers do not want to sleep with nothing on them. One r/sleep commenter in October 2026 wrote “I now have muslin for almost everything,” and that it is “all about breathability” (r/sleep). Muslin gives you the feeling of cloth over you, with open gaps in it.

The con: the crinkled texture is not for everyone. If gauze feels wrong on your skin, feel one before you buy. The 100-Night Guarantee covers a first order, so you can test it, but we would rather you know first.

Reason #5: The size you need is on the page

Reason #5 is a limit that belongs in the list, because surprise size is why some people switch back. Cherish lists the six-layer in four sizes: throw 50 × 60 in, large throw 60 × 80 in, queen 80 × 90 in and king 95 × 110 in. Sizes are measured at full stretch, so a slight variation is normal.

Order from the mattress if coverage is the goal. Order the throw if the blanket is for your body or the sofa. A throw will not cover two adults, so a shared bed needs the queen or king.

Reason #6: The wash is simple, and the dryer stays off

Reason #6 is care, including the part that makes some people refuse the switch. You wash it at home: cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no softener. Then you hang it. The label says no tumble dry, no iron and no hot wash.

That is a reason to switch if your current cover needs a special cleaner, or if you are done with a synthetic that holds smells. It is a reason to stay if you will not hang a wet queen blanket. If a dryer is part of your week, the LumiBliss™ waffle takes a low tumble dry.

Reason #7: The price and the keep-it terms are easy to check

Reason #7 is the deal you can check, not a mood. On October 27, 2026 the solid six-layer throw is $69, the large throw is $89, the queen is $109 and the king is $129. Prints cost $10 more. Buy 1 Get 1 Free applies to select styles, and today it includes this blanket.

The written guarantee is 100 nights from delivery. If the blanket is not right, we refund the order in full and you keep it. There is no return postage. It covers the first order of each product per customer or household, up to 3 units, and a Buy 1 Get 1 Free pair counts as 2 units. Standard shipping in the US and Canada is free at $69 or more and $8 below that. Orders are fulfilled and shipped in the US in 1–3 working days on average, with tracking.

The con on price: the premium queen is $162, and a waffle XL is $179.95. “Muslin from $69” is the solid six-layer throw. It is not the price of every bed size.

Which muslin should you order?

Order the six-layer if you are the hot sleeper in the posts above. Order the premium only after a lighter muslin felt too thin. Order by the mattress if you want coverage, and by your body if you want a throw. Prints start at $79. For more on the cloth, read what a muslin blanket is. For the full list of what to look for, read the best blanket for hot sleepers.

What should you check before you switch?

Check four things before you buy. The dryer: you will hang this blanket. The tape: inches are at full stretch. The offer: Buy 1 Get 1 Free is on select styles. The room: the National Institute on Aging suggests a cooler bedroom, adjustable layers and a fan for hot nights (NIA: Hot flashes, what can I do?). No blanket cools a hot room by itself.

Questions shoppers ask

Will a muslin blanket stop night sweats?

No. A blanket does not change a medical cause. It can change how the bed handles heat and damp. If night sweats are new, heavy or come with other symptoms, talk to a doctor.

Is muslin better than polyester for hot sleepers?

For the layer on top of you, most hot sleepers in the threads we read prefer cotton in an open weave. Cotton absorbs moisture and lets it move away, while polyester tends to leave it on the surface. Muslin is not the only cotton that works. Waffle and percale are others.

How do I wash the six-layer muslin?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, with a small amount of mild detergent and no fabric softener. Hang it to dry. Do not use the tumble dryer or an iron, and avoid hot washes.

Is Buy 1 Get 1 Free on every Cherish blanket?

No. Buy 1 Get 1 Free applies to select styles. Today it includes the six-layer muslin, the premium muslin, the LumiBliss™ waffle and the ArdoToasty™ fleece. It does not include the GlaciRest™ blanket.
